A cryptocurrency wallet associated with the dark web marketplace Alphabay is said to have donated 31 million dollars in Bitcoin to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road. According to a report by Chainalysis, 300 Bitcoin donated to Ulbricht earlier this month originated from Alphabay, which operated from 2014 to 2017. Chainalysis suspects that this money comes from a major provider on the platform.
ZachXBT, an independent blockchain investigator, confirmed that 300 Bitcoin did not come from Silk Road and pointed out suspicious patterns in the way the donors moved money, suggesting a criminal origin. They used multiple mixing services to obscure the transaction trail. Analysis shows this is a “legitimate donation, but not from a legal source.” In January, President Donald Trump pardoned Ulbricht after 12 years in prison.
