The Ethereum Layer 2 scaling race has experienced personnel changes. Neel Somani, co-founder and Executive Chairman of Eclipse Labs, officially stepped down in October this year and will focus on cutting-edge research areas such as machine learning.

Eclipse's growth trajectory is quite noteworthy. When Somani founded the company in 2022, it initially focused on scaling solutions for the Solana virtual machine ecosystem. However, in 2023, Eclipse shifted its development focus to building high-performance Ethereum L2 networks. This strategic switch has gradually gained market recognition.

Funding also confirmed this recognition—In 2024, Eclipse completed a $50 million Series A funding round, providing ample support for further technological R&D and ecosystem expansion. The project was subsequently taken over by a new CEO to continue advancing the L2 scaling solutions.

From Solana ecosystem tools to an independent Ethereum L2 network, Eclipse's evolution reflects the dynamic adjustments in the Web3 infrastructure market. High-performance blockchains and L2 solutions are becoming the industry’s focus of competition.

ngl, the pivot from solana vm to eth l2 screams insufficient validation of initial thesis... technically speaking, how many teams actually stress-test their roadmaps before dumping 50m into execution? statistically improbable they got it right on second try, but sure, market said so

Another founder has run off to pursue AI. Has this track really become so competitive that no one is left?

It's the same old story of founders running away to learn new technology, but Eclipse's move from Solana to ETH L2 is quite clever. Going with the trend is better than being eliminated.

Bro, this wave of turning points is quite interesting. Moving from Solana to Ethereum L2 is probably just smelling the money. Somani has started researching ML. Is this an attempt to combine AI and blockchain? Or is he simply tired and wants to switch tracks? 50 million A-round is quite a lot, but the key is actually developing the L2. Many L2 projects are still just talking about it. By the way, this pattern of founders leaving and new CEOs taking over seems to happen every week in Web3. Whether Eclipse can break through depends on subsequent technical implementation. Just telling stories is useless.

The founder has gone into machine learning. Is this L2 still okay?

Such frequent strategic shifts depend on how well the new CEO's contract deployment skills are. Moving Solana to Ethereum L2, the underlying architecture must be re-audited to prevent any permission control vulnerabilities.
