Bitcoin Web3 ecosystem has recently seen new developments. On December 30th, the Bitcoin ecosystem decentralized protocol BLIFE and Web3 gaming interoperability project Portal announced their merger, and will now operate under the unified brand of Portal.
This merger is quite interesting — Portal maintains its original cross-chain gaming and interoperability advantages while integrating BLIFE’s products and ecological resources on Bitcoin. Notably, Benjamin Charbit, the former game director of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, will officially take on the role of Portal CEO, indicating a move towards a more professional gaming direction.
From a funding perspective, leading Web3 investment firms like Animoca Brands are not only investing to support Portal’s relaunch but also bringing their gaming investment portfolios into the project. G-20 is also involved as an ecological and strategic partner. This collaboration indicates strong industry confidence in this direction.
Over the past two years, BLIFE has invested heavily in Bitcoin Web3 infrastructure — launching Bitcoin’s first on-chain identity protocol BLIFE.ID and meme coin trading platform Odin.fun. Mid-year, they also acquired Bitcoin L1 cross-chain bridge Beyond. This bridging protocol is about to go live on the mainnet, which will become an important part of Portal’s cross-chain technology stack, enabling native Bitcoin interoperability for Portal. From this perspective, this merger is laying the groundwork for interoperability within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Merging sounds good, but can this game direction really work out? There hasn't been any movement in building games on Bitcoin all these years.

My understanding is that this time, the Portal merger has gained support from major backers like Animoca, combined with the professional background of the Ubisoft game director. It feels like they are seriously committed to getting things done.

Ubisoft director to become CEO? This might really boost the gaming atmosphere of Portal, but whether the reputation can keep up is another matter.
