Ethereum Foundation Co-Executive Director Tomasz Stanczak recently shared his initial motivation for getting involved in the Ethereum ecosystem.

In his early years of developing Ethereum, Tomasz admitted that his motivation was purely driven by technical enthusiasm. He wanted to develop some on-chain tools for his practical needs, and this curiosity became his stepping stone. The real turning point came from studying the Ethereum Yellow Paper—a technical document that provides an in-depth explanation of the underlying design principles. After theoretical learning, he began practicing with the EVM, gradually understanding how Ethereum works through hands-on experimentation.

Starting from personal needs, then delving into technical details, and finally becoming a core member of the foundation, Tomasz’s growth path reflects that of many early developers. It is this group of people attracted by technology, constantly practicing and exploring, who have driven Ethereum’s transformation from concept to reality. His experience also serves as a reminder to newcomers: to truly understand blockchain, studying the Yellow Paper and practical experimentation are both indispensable.

The Yellow Paper is really a must-read for beginners; just talking about theories on paper is useless.

The Yellow Paper is indeed unavoidable; not reading it once is pointless.

The Yellow Paper really needs to be read; just looking at the flashy stuff that project teams say is useless.

The Yellow Paper is indeed an unavoidable hurdle, but to be honest, most people give up after reading just two pages.

The Yellow Paper is really dense; I read it three times and still couldn't understand it.

That thing called the Yellow Paper is really awesome. Once you understand it, you'll realize why Ethereum is so powerful.
