When does the Madrid Stock Exchange operate? Trading hours and times

How the main Spanish stock exchange operates

The Madrid Stock Exchange represents the epicenter of the stock market in Spain and coordinates its activity through the SIBE (Spanish Interconnection Stock Market), which integrates the Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, and Bilbao exchanges. This institution, established on September 10, 1831, through the Creation Law drafted by Pedro Sainz de Andino, began its operations on October 20 of the same year. Currently, the main players in the Spanish market — financial entities like BBVA and Banco Santander, internationally renowned construction companies such as ACS, Ferrovial, and Acciona, as well as Inditex — operate within this platform that supports the IBEX 35 index.

Trading hours: opening, trading, and closing

The regular trading period at the Madrid Stock Exchange begins at 9:00 am and ends at 5:30 pm (CEST time). However, the market has complementary phases:

Opening auction: from 8:30 am to 9:00 am, where pending orders from the previous session and new auction orders are processed to determine the starting price.

Regular trading: from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, the main trading period.

Closing auction: from 5:30 pm to 5:35 pm, which establishes a equilibrium price for unexecuted orders.

Institutional background of the Spanish market

The SIBE consolidated the four Spanish exchanges under its structure starting in 1995, later assuming management of Bolsa y Mercados Españoles (BME) in 2001. The IBEX 35 index, established on January 14, 1992, groups the 35 companies with the highest market capitalization in Spain, constituting the main benchmark of the national listed economy. These companies maintain particularly significant international projections in Latin American economies.

Mastering these operating times is essential for any participant wishing to execute strategies without limitations on Spain’s most representative stocks and to take advantage of all phases of the trading session.
