In the Sui ecosystem, there is a project gaining increasing attention called Walrus—a decentralized storage protocol designed specifically for large-scale Web3 data.

It sounds a bit abstract, but the problem is quite real. We often complain about slow blockchain transactions and high fees, but the true bottleneck isn't actually there. The real challenge faced by the on-chain world is: how to store data long-term, operate at low cost, and ensure security and trustworthiness at the same time?

For example, high-resolution images of an NFT project, character assets in a blockchain game, or training data for an AI model—if they cannot be hosted on centralized servers, then the decentralization promise of Web3 becomes a joke. Ultimately, data storage is the bottleneck.

Walrus's approach is to use a network of distributed nodes combined with coding techniques to do this. Even if several nodes in the network go offline, the remaining nodes' data fragments can still fully restore the entire data. More importantly, it can seamlessly collaborate with Sui's smart contracts—data stored is not only secure but can also be directly read and managed by on-chain logic.

In other words, Walrus is building a truly usable and trustworthy data infrastructure for Web3 applications.

Data storage is indeed a bottleneck, and Walrus's approach is quite practical.

Walrus is definitely something to watch. Without data storage solutions, Web3 is just a castle in the air.

NFT images are always hosted on centralized servers. Isn't this just pseudo-Web3? The walrus approach really hits the pain point.

NGL Walrus's approach still has some merit; at least someone is seriously trying to solve the longstanding problem of data storage.

Data storage is truly a neglected pain point in Web3, and the idea behind Walrus is indeed quite interesting.
