Microsoft warns that Chinese hacker group Silk Typhoon is targeting cloud technology to monitor US policy investigations
Microsoft ( released the latest security report on 3/5, pointing out that a Chinese hacker group called Silk Typhoon ) is currently launching attacks on remote management tools and cloud applications, attempting to monitor enterprises and institutions in the United States and other countries.
Microsoft Reveals Chinese Hackers Launching Supply Chain Attacks
Microsoft pointed out that the Silk Hurricane mainly targets cloud storage services, stealing keys that can be used to access customer data, and launching attacks on state and local government organizations, as well as technology companies, to collect confidential information related to US government policies and law enforcement investigations.
Once hacked into the US Department of the Treasury, more than 400 computers were infiltrated.
The Silk Typhoon had launched a cyber attack on the US Treasury Department as early as December last year, with over 400 computers being hacked, along with nearly 3000 files. Among them were stolen law enforcement, foreign investment investigation, and national security intelligence related data. Hackers deliberately chose non-working hours to carry out the attack to avoid drawing attention.
Microsoft further pointed out that the Silk typhoon is one of the hacker organizations funded by the Chinese government, with powerful technical and resources. In the cyber espionage activities within China, its attack range is the widest. And it has taken monitoring actions against multiple industries such as medical, legal, higher education, national defense, energy, and government agencies.
It's different from "Salt Typhoon"! U.S. telecommunications companies have also been targeted by Chinese hackers
It is worth noting that Silk Typhoon is not the same team as another Chinese hacking group, Salt Typhoon (Salt Typhoon). Typhoon Yan was accused as early as 2023 of hacking into a number of U.S. telecommunications companies, and Chinese hackers have long infiltrated and monitored critical U.S. infrastructure.
In summary, Chinese hackers' infiltration actions on cloud technology and supply chain are still ongoing. Enterprises and government agencies must raise awareness, strengthen cybersecurity measures to prevent confidential data leakage.
