A false announcement claiming "Ghibli Wind AI creation should stop" goes viral on Twitter! Ghibli firmly denies: has never issued a warning.
There is news that Studio Ghibli's AI application that generates Ghibli-style illustrations has issued a warning text to stop publishing. However, this "fake warning text" was widely circulated on X (formerly Twitter) and sparked heated discussions. However, Ghibli made it clear: "We have never issued such a warning." And the person who made the fake announcement seems to be related to Solana.
The fake announcement falsely claims that Ghibli is infringing on AI, coming from the Solana community.
This fake warning letter circulating on X claims to have been sent by a legal representative of Studio Ghibli, alleging that a foreign AI application named "Gib" has been notified for generating images in the style of Studio Ghibli. The document is also adorned with an illustration resembling Totoro and the logo "STUDIO GHIBLI, INC.", which at first glance appears to be an authentic document.
The post was published on March 28 by an overseas Twitter user, stating: "I received a cease and desist from Studio Ghibli" "AI creators should not be punished, they should be protected."
However, the email address indicated in the warning message is actually invalid, and an error message will be received when attempting to send an email. In this regard, the "Community Notes" on X issued a reminder, questioning the authenticity of the document.
Suspected former Solana employee hype
The account that made the fake announcement, @tj _littlejohn, who also posted the "Gib" app, introduced himself as having worked at Solana Labs.
The entire incident shows that he likely just wanted to hype up his application.
False warning document requires to stop distribution.
According to the content of this fake warning letter, Gib is suspected of unauthorized use of Ghibli's works and brand names, demanding the cessation of the application distribution, stopping the promotion of related content, and agreeing in writing within "7 days, otherwise legal action will be taken."
After the document was leaked, it sparked heated discussions on X, with some users believing it to be a genuine warning, thinking "Ghibli has finally taken action against AI applications," while many others pointed out that it could be a prank or fake news.
Studio Ghibli clearly denies: "Never issued such a warning"
According to J-CAST, a related person in charge at Studio Ghibli clearly stated on March 28: "We have never issued such a warning letter." This makes the falsehood of the warning letter even more apparent.
The incident of the false warning document reflects the ongoing escalation of copyright disputes brought about by generative AI technology. Recently, many users have utilized the new features of conversational generative AI "ChatGPT" to create illustrations in the style of Studio Ghibli and publish them online, sparking discussions about potential copyright infringement.
AI-generated "Ghibli-style" illustrations surge in attention
Recently, the trend of creating Ghibli-style illustrations through generative AI applications and sharing them on social media has been on the rise. In particular, the number of user submissions utilizing ChatGPT's new features along with image-generating AI has significantly increased, sparking enthusiastic discussions among fans.
However, these unauthorized Ghibli-style illustrations may infringe on copyright, thus the issue of the boundary between AI art and copyright is expected to become a more heated topic of discussion in the future.
