Cryptocurrency Exchanges: Asia has become the most concentrated region of digital cryptocurrency developers worldwide
There are over 23,600 programmers active in the cryptocurrency space. However, this number accounts for only a small fraction of the total 27 million technology developers worldwide and has not yet reached the peak of 31,000 in 2022.
Over time, the total number of cryptocurrency programmers is growing, with an average annual increase of 39%.
However, in the past year, the total number of developers decreased by 7%, failing to keep up with last year’s record-breaking growth in the cryptocurrency market.
The number of cryptocurrency developers in November 2024 is 7% lower than in the same period in 2023.
Another significant change is the distribution of programmers this year compared to previous years. In 2015, North America and Europe accounted for up to 80% of cryptocurrency developers, but by 2024, their market shares have decreased to 24% and 31%, respectively, while the proportion of Asian programmers has surged to 32%, ranking first.
One in three cryptocurrency programmers is from Asia.
Breaking down by blockchain ecosystem, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) still maintains dominance, with over 8,900 developers, making it 3.5 times larger than the second-ranked platform with 2,500 developers. Solana far surpasses other systems such as Cosmos, Polkadot, Move, and others.
EVM remains the most concentrated platform for developers.
Ethereum is also the most popular blockchain in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and China, but Solana is the most popular in India.
Solana is the most popular blockchain among Indian programmers, while Ethereum leads in other regions.
Additionally, the report highlights that Solana is the most favored ecosystem among emerging blockchain developers in 2024. This marks the first time since 2016 that Ethereum has been surpassed in this category.
Solana is leading in attracting new developers.
Another fact consolidating Ethereum’s position is that it remains the most innovative and groundbreaking blockchain in the cryptocurrency industry, as evidenced by the number of new lines of code created and deployed, accounting for 65% of all new code in 2024.
Ethereum and layer-2 solutions continue to be the center of most coding breakthroughs in the blockchain industry.
EVM’s biggest competitive advantage can be seen as its “integration-centric” roadmap, which focuses on accelerating development. Layer-2 solutions further enhance network scalability for every project and application within the ecosystem. However, due to liquidity dispersion, Ethereum has been largely stagnant throughout 2024, a situation also reflected in the developer community, with the proportion of developers engaged in layer-2 development increasing from 25% in 2022 to 56% in 2024.
Over time, the number of Ethereum developers working on layer-2 projects has also been steadily increasing.
More details, based on the current highest layer-2 TVL. On Ethereum, the number of programmers is also leading, approaching 4,300, followed by Arbitrum (3,450), StarkNet (2,548), Optimism (2,416), zkEVM (1,517), and ZKsync (1,115).
From a technical perspective, approximately 2,000 programmers are engaged in projects using this technology. Zero-knowledge proof Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has considered this mechanism a superior long-term solution, with the total number of projects increasing from 40 in 2020 to 639 in 2024.
The number of ZK projects continues to grow.
Regarding Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency network by market cap has over 1,200 developers, a figure that has remained stable over the past year. However, an emerging trend is that more developers are experimenting with new ideas within this ecosystem, including… layer-2 Bitcoin NFTs and scaling solutions, with a growth rate of up to 42%. **$COMP **$SUSHI **$UNI **
