Currently, when it comes to data storage, most people are still using centralized cloud services. They are easy to use, but costly, prone to monopolization, and there are concerns about censorship risks. These pain points have not been solved until Walrus appeared on Sui, truly offering us an alternative.
How does it achieve this? It relies on two core technologies: erasure coding and blob storage mechanisms. Simply put, it breaks your large files into fragments and disperses them across nodes worldwide. Even if a node goes offline or is attacked, the redundant data on other nodes can reconstruct the complete file, making it unalterable and uncensorable, while the cost remains a fraction of traditional cloud services. Imagine uploading data once and having it permanently stored on the chain—this changes the game for many scenarios.
Why can Walrus outperform other storage protocols? Ultimately, it’s because the Sui chain provides it with the foundation. Sui’s parallel execution architecture is inherently suited for handling big data.
