The OpenAI timeline nobody is putting together:

Jan 2025: Sam Altman calls DeepSeek "impressive" and "an invigorating competitor."
Feb 2025: Altman in a Reddit AMA: "I personally think we have been on the wrong side of history."
Aug 2025: Altman to reporters: "I'm worried about China."
Feb 2026: OpenAI sends a memo to the US Congress accusing DeepSeek of "free-riding on American R&D."
12 months. that's how fast "welcome to the competition" turned into "Congress please help."
what happened? DeepSeek released open-weight models that rival top U.S. models at a fraction of the cost. developers switched. researchers paid attention. the R1 launch wiped nearly $600B off Nvidia's market cap in a single day.
OpenAI's response wasn't to build faster. it was to lobby.
the memo accuses DeepSeek of "distillation." using ChatGPT outputs to train their own models. which may violate OpenAI's Terms of Service. not US law. Terms of Service.
meanwhile OpenAI trained on the entire internet without asking. books. code. art. when creators complained, OpenAI said "fair use."
someone does it back to them and suddenly it's a national security issue.
tell me who's winning without telling me who's winning.
