Merck is set to lay off approximately 150 employees at its North Carolina facility, which produces the HPV vaccine Gardasil, in response to a significant slump in sales. The company attributed this downturn to weak demand in China, leading to a 39% decrease in global sales in 2025, and a recent change in U.S. immunization recommendations for the vaccine. Merck’s management has indicated that Gardasil is no longer considered a key growth driver.
