Polymarket's betting on the Nobel Peace Prize has sparked controversy, and Norwegian officials have launched a spy investigation.
A few hours before this year's Nobel Peace Prize announcement, a large number of bets suddenly appeared on the prediction market platform Polymarket regarding Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado winning the award. Due to the explosive growth and large amounts of these trades before the official announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee suspects that information has been leaked and has officially launched an investigation.
Polymarket experiences strange bets, three accounts profit $90,000
According to reports, on October 10th, just hours before the Nobel Peace Prize announcement, there was a sudden surge of unusual bets on Polymarket regarding the Nobel laureate. One trader, coded “dirtycup”, placed a bet of about $70,000 in a short period, wagering that Machado would win.
The account was just opened this month and has no previous betting records on Polymarket. After the results were announced, he indeed won and made a profit of about $30,000. According to the platform's public data, a total of three accounts placed bets on Machado, collectively earning about $90,000.

The Nobel Institute immediately launched an internal investigation on 10/11. Director Kristian Berg Harpviken stated to the media that they are investigating from different angles, but there is no conclusion yet. He emphasized that it is still impossible to estimate how long the investigation will take. Harpviken further pointed out:
“The research institute has long been a target of systematic espionage activities, and this time it is very likely that someone has successfully stolen internal information and made a fortune from it.”
Suspected of international espionage activities, the investigation continues to escalate.
Although it has not yet been confirmed whether there has been a hacker infiltration, this incident of predicting the Nobel Peace Prize in advance has already sparked significant attention from the Norwegian government and international public opinion.
This is also the first time that there are clear signs indicating that internal information of the Nobel Prize may have been leaked and used for speculative behavior. Since Polymarket operates as a decentralized prediction market using blockchain technology, all betting records are public and transparent, which makes the timing and amount of abnormal transactions more evident.
As of 10/13, the investigation is still ongoing. Although the Nobel Institute has not disclosed specific progress, it has clearly stated that the incident exhibits signs of international espionage activities. Currently, the focus of external attention includes whether any internal secrets have been stolen, whether the individuals involved are connected to foreign governments or organizations, and whether this incident will undermine the credibility of the Nobel Prize system.
