America's AI boom may face a power shortage of 44 Gigawatts.

Abstract generation in progress

The United States is facing a significant energy shortfall as AI-serving data centers grow faster than the national power grid's ability to expand. From 2025 to 2028, electricity demand is expected to reach 69 gigawatts—equivalent to the consumption of a mid-sized industrial nation. Currently, only 25 gigawatts are being met, creating a gap of 44 gigawatts, equivalent to the capacity of dozens of nuclear power plants.

The compensation for this shortfall requires a huge investment, amounting to hundreds of billions of USD. As AI chips consume more electricity and companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft expand their data centers, utility companies warn that they cannot increase capacity in time. Although there are alternative solutions such as private substations or renewable energy, they are still insufficient. Experts warn that without immediate investment, the United States risks falling behind in the AI revolution.
